Hanging Pillar

Lepakshi is a small town in Ananthpur district of Andhra Pradesh state. It is 15 km east of Hindupur and about 120 km north of Bangalore. Lepakshi is very important historically and archaeologically. There are three shrines dedicated to Shiva, Vishnu and Virabhadra. The most interesting thing about Lepakshi is its hanging pillar. A pillar which is attached with the ceiling but not to the floor. The pillar is at Veerabhadra temple. It is famous as Aakaasa Sthambha (floating pillar), though it is ahanging pillar and not a floating pillar. One can easily pass a cloth between the underside of the pillar and the floor.

Another interesting thing about Lepakshi is its monumental Nandi.  The monolithic "Nandi" sculpture which is said to be the biggest monolithic Nandi in India, is synonymous with Lepakshi. It is 4.5 m high and 8.23m long.

The big granite bull is on the main road, about 200 meters from the temple. It has been positioned such that it faces the shivalinga shielded by a huge serpent inside the temple. Said to be the second largest monolith in India, after Gomateswara, the Nandi sports a huge kaasu malai, a bell chain, earrings and other jewellery.

Loktak (Floating Lake)

Loktak Lake
Loktak Lake is the largest freshwater lake in North- Eastern India, also called the only Floating lake in the world due to the floating phumdis (heterogeneous mass of vegetation, soil, and organic matters at various stages of decomposition) on it. It is located near Moirang in Manipur state, India. There are several ‘phumdis’ floating all over the entire stretch of the lake giving it an amazing perspective. These floating ‘phumdis’ are sturdy enough to build thatched huts upon them and make great settlements for the local fishermen. This lake plays an important role in the economy of Manipur. It is considered to be the lifeline for the people of Manipur.
